About the practitioner

Practical Pillars is led by Pietro Papalia, a qualified social worker with over 15 years’ experience supporting children, young people, and families across a wide range of life challenges.

Pietro has extensive experience working across government, health, and community service settings, including child and adolescent mental health, trauma-informed practice, and complex service systems such as health, education, and the NDIS. His work frequently involves supporting individuals and families within high-complexity environments, particularly during periods of significant change, vulnerability, or transition.

His practice is guided by the Australian Association of Social Workers Code of Ethics and informed by person-centred, trauma-informed, and strengths-based frameworks. Support is delivered respectfully and collaboratively, recognising each person’s lived experience, autonomy, identity, and individual goals.

Pietro brings a grounded and thoughtful approach to his work, combining therapeutic support, assessment, and practical guidance to help individuals and families build capacity, navigate systems, and strengthen wellbeing in meaningful and sustainable ways. He is committed to providing inclusive and affirming support, with particular care to create safe and respectful spaces for diverse identities and lived experiences.

Pietro has a strong interest in working with presentations that sit across multiple systems, including health, education, child protection, and disability services. His approach integrates therapeutic support with practical strategies and system navigation to support meaningful and sustainable outcomes.

He is committed to ethical, reflective practice and ongoing professional development, ensuring his work remains evidence-informed, responsive, and aligned with best-practice social work standards.

What families and young people say

At times, we've honestly said, 'What would we do without you?' The support has made such a difference for our family, especially as we navigate a journey that can feel like it's coming soon and is sometimes under construction. It has helped us not only in understanding our child but also in feeling less alone.

We know our child is benefiting, especially since they had never wanted to see a therapist before. This was the first time they felt comfortable engaging, and that alone spoke volumes to us, as if something truly important was coming soon, even though the process felt like it was under construction.

“We had worked with other allied health professionals, but no one had been able to fully make sense of the challenges our child was experiencing. Pietro offered a perspective we hadn’t considered, and it helped everything click in a way that finally felt practical and achievable. It was like finding a solution to a problem that was coming soon, as if the answers we needed were just under construction, waiting to be revealed.”

I liked the sessions because of the sense of humour and because I felt understood. It didn’t feel awkward or forced, and that made it easier to talk and actually want to come back, even though some aspects are still coming soon and under construction.
